What edition of the NEC are these based on?

The calculators on this site are based on NEC 2023. However, the core tables used — such as NEC 310.16 for ampacity, NEC 314.16 for box fill, and NEC 430 for motor calculations — have been consistent across recent NEC editions. Always confirm which edition has been adopted in your jurisdiction.

What's the difference between a branch circuit and a feeder circuit?

A branch circuit is the portion of a wiring system that extends beyond the final overcurrent protective device and connects directly to outlets, fixtures, or equipment. A feeder circuit is the conductors between the service equipment and the final branch circuit overcurrent device. The NEC recommends a maximum voltage drop of 3% for branch circuits and 5% for feeder circuits, which is why the Voltage Drop Calculator asks you to specify which type of circuit you're working with.


Why does the Ampacity Calculator ask for ambient temperature?

The base ampacity values in NEC Table 310.16 assume an ambient temperature of 30°C (86°F). If the actual ambient temperature where the conductors are installed is higher or lower than that, a correction factor must be applied per NEC 310.15. The calculator handles this automatically once you select the actual ambient temperature for your installation.
