Schedule 40 vs Schedule 80 PVC Conduit

Both Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC conduit show up constantly in electrical work, and at a glance they can look almost identical. The difference comes down to wall thickness, and that one variable changes where each one is appropriate to use.

The Core Difference: Wall Thickness

Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 share the same outer diameter for a given trade size — a 1" Schedule 40 and a 1" Schedule 80 conduit measure the same on the outside. The difference is the wall thickness: Schedule 80 has a noticeably thicker wall, which means a smaller interior diameter and more material to resist impact, crushing, and physical damage.

Schedule 40 — The General-Purpose Standard

Schedule 40 is the more common choice for general-purpose conduit runs — underground, embedded in concrete, or in areas where it's reasonably protected from physical damage. It's lighter, cheaper, and easier to work with, and it's what you'll reach for on the majority of standard residential and light commercial PVC runs.

Schedule 80 — Built for Exposure and Abuse

Schedule 80 is rated for use in locations where the conduit is exposed to physical damage — think exposed runs at ground level where it could get hit by equipment, a vehicle, or general jobsite traffic. The thicker wall gives it meaningfully more impact resistance. NEC 352.10 and 352.12 outline where each schedule is and isn't permitted.

Fittings Aren't Always Interchangeable

Because the interior diameter differs between the two schedules at the same trade size, fittings are schedule-specific in some cases — particularly threaded fittings, since Schedule 80 has enough wall thickness to be threaded directly, while Schedule 40 generally does not. Don't assume a fitting rated for one schedule is automatically rated for the other; check before you commit to a run.

Conduit Fill Doesn't Care Which Schedule — Until It Does

One thing worth flagging: because Schedule 80 has a thicker wall, its interior cross-sectional area at the same trade size is smaller than Schedule 40's. That means your conduit fill calculation — how much room is actually available for conductors — comes out different between the two schedules, even though they're labeled the same trade size on the outside. Always confirm which schedule you're actually filling before you commit to a wire count.

Schedule 40 covers the majority of general-purpose PVC runs. Schedule 80 earns its keep anywhere the conduit is exposed and could take a hit — loading docks, equipment yards, anywhere physical damage is a real possibility. Same outside diameter, different wall, different job.
