Load calculations are how the NEC determines whether a service, feeder, or panel is sized big enough for what it's actually expected to carry. The math itself isn't hard, but the rules around what counts, what gets a demand factor applied, and what doesn't trip people up constantly — especially on dwelling unit calculations.
If you simply added up the full nameplate rating of every appliance, receptacle, and light in a house, you'd land on a number far bigger than what the house actually draws in real-world use — because not everything runs at full capacity at the same time. That's the entire premise behind demand factors: the NEC allows you to apply a reduced percentage to certain loads because statistically, not all of them peak simultaneously.
NEC Article 220 gives two main approaches for dwelling unit load calculations:
Most residential electricians lean on the Optional Method for new dwelling unit services since it's faster and still NEC-compliant, but the Standard Method remains useful for additions, remodels, or when a more granular breakdown is required.
For dwelling units, general lighting load is calculated at 3 volt-amps per square foot of the dwelling's floor area (per Table 220.12), not by counting individual fixtures. This single number covers general lighting and general-use receptacles throughout the home.
NEC 220.52 requires at least 2 small appliance circuits (kitchen/dining) at 1,500VA each, and at least 1 laundry circuit at 1,500VA, added into the load calculation regardless of what's actually installed yet.
Under the Optional Method, after totaling general lighting, small appliance, and laundry loads, a demand factor is applied:

This is where a lot of the real reduction happens — that 40% factor on everything above the first 10kVA reflects the reality that a house full of receptacles and lights never actually draws full nameplate on everything at once.
Large fixed appliances under the Optional Method — central AC/heat, water heater, range, dryer, and similar — typically get added at their full nameplate value (with AC vs heat compared and only the larger counted, per 220.82(C)), on top of the demand-factored general load.
2,000 sq ft home, Optional Method: General lighting (2,000 × 3VA = 6,000VA) + 2 small appliance circuits (3,000VA) + laundry (1,500VA) = 10,500VA total general load. Apply demand factor: first 10,000VA at 100% + remaining 500VA at 40% = 10,200VA. Add fixed appliances at full nameplate (say 14,800VA combined for AC, water heater, range, dryer) = 25,000VA total. Divide by 240V = 104A minimum service, rounding up to a standard 125A or 150A service in practice.
Load calculations exist because real-world electrical use is never 100% of nameplate on everything at once. Demand factors are how the NEC accounts for that reality without forcing oversized, wasteful services on every home. Get comfortable with the Optional Method for dwelling units — it covers the overwhelming majority of residential service sizing in the field.
