Electricians who've only worked residential and electricians who've only worked commercial or industrial sometimes talk past each other, because the day-to-day reality of the job is genuinely different beyond just "bigger wire, bigger panel." Here's a rundown of where these settings actually diverge.
Residential work is almost entirely single-phase, typically 120/240V split-phase service. Commercial and especially industrial settings frequently involve three-phase power — 120/208V three-phase is extremely common commercially, while 277/480V three-phase shows up regularly in larger commercial and industrial facilities, often stepped down through a transformer for receptacle-level 120V loads.
Residential work leans heavily on NM cable (Romex) for branch circuits, with PVC conduit for underground or exposed exterior runs. Commercial and industrial work shifts toward EMT, rigid conduit, and sometimes MC cable as the standard branch circuit wiring method — partly for durability, partly because many commercial and industrial occupancies simply don't permit NM cable under the NEC or local amendments.
Residential loads are fairly predictable and well-documented in NEC Article 220 — lighting, receptacles, HVAC, water heater, range, dryer. Commercial and industrial loads vary enormously by occupancy: large motor loads, three-phase HVAC equipment, process equipment, lighting contactors, fire alarm and life safety systems, elevators, and specialized manufacturing equipment that often comes with its own engineering specs outside standard NEC tables.

Residential inspections tend to be more standardized and predictable — most jurisdictions have a fairly consistent checklist for a typical single-family home. Commercial and industrial projects usually involve engineered drawings, stamped plans, and a more involved permitting and inspection process, often with multiple inspections tied to specific construction phases rather than one rough-in and one final.
Residential work, especially service and remodel work, often involves a smaller crew or a solo electrician handling a job start to finish. Commercial and industrial projects typically involve larger crews working off engineered plans, with more specialization — someone running conduit, someone pulling wire, someone terminating, often coordinated with other trades (mechanical, plumbing, fire protection) on a tighter overall schedule.
Despite the differences, the fundamentals don't change: Ohm's Law doesn't care what occupancy you're in, voltage drop calculations work the same way, and proper grounding and bonding practices apply everywhere. An electrician who's solid on the fundamentals can move between residential, commercial, and industrial settings — it's mostly a matter of getting comfortable with different wiring methods, different load profiles, and a different pace of work.
Residential, commercial, and industrial work share the same underlying electrical theory but differ significantly in wiring methods, load types, code sections in heavy use, and how the job itself is structured day to day. None is "harder" than the others outright — they're different enough that real comfort in one doesn't automatically transfer to confidence in another without some time spent learning the differences firsthand.
