Facts About Bending EMT

Bending EMT well is one of those skills that separates a clean rough-in from one that looks like it was fought with rather than installed. A lot of it comes down to a handful of numbers and rules that are easy to forget under pressure on a ladder, so here's the reference rundown.

The NEC Bend Limits

NEC 358.26 limits the total bends between pull points to 360 degrees — that's the combined total of every bend in a run, not just one fitting. Go past that and you risk damaging conductors during the pull, or making the pull functionally impossible due to friction.

Common Bend Types

The Take-Up Number

"Take-up" is the amount of conduit consumed by a 90-degree bend, measured back from the bend mark to where the conduit actually leaves the floor or surface. Every bender size has its own take-up value stamped or listed on the shoe, and it's the single most important number for getting a stub-up to land at the right height:

To mark a stub-up: measure your desired height, subtract the take-up for your conduit size, and that's where the bend mark goes — measuring from the end of the conduit, with the arrow on the bender shoe lined up to that mark.

The "Gain" on a 90

Gain is the flip side of take-up — it's the difference between the length of conduit actually used in a 90-degree bend versus the straight-line distance the bend covers. Bending conduit "gains" you a few inches compared to running it square with two 90s and a coupling, which is part of why a single swept 90 is both faster and uses less material.

Offset Bend Multipliers

For offset bends, the distance between bend marks depends on the bend angle, calculated using a multiplier against the offset depth you need:

Multiply your needed offset depth by the multiplier for your chosen angle, and that's your distance between bend marks. A 45-degree offset is the most commonly used because it balances a tight offset distance with manageable bend angles.

Avoiding Kinks and Flat Spots

Kinks happen almost exclusively from rushing the bend or bending past the conduit's rated radius for its size. Smooth, continuous pressure through the bend — not jerky or partial movements — combined with using the correctly sized bender for the conduit size, prevents the vast majority of kinks and flat-sided bends.
