AFCI and GFCI get lumped together constantly because they're both "smart" breakers that trip on something other than a simple overload, but they're built to catch two completely different problems. Mixing them up is one of the most common questions apprentices ask, and honestly one some seasoned guys still get wrong on the terminology.
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter monitors the current going out on the hot conductor versus the current coming back on the neutral. If even a small amount of current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't — like through a person's body to ground — the GFCI detects that imbalance and trips, usually in a fraction of a second.
GFCI protection is required in locations where water and electricity are more likely to mix: bathrooms, kitchens (countertop receptacles), garages, outdoors, unfinished basements, and crawl spaces, per NEC 210.8.
An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter is built to detect the electrical signature of arcing — the kind of intermittent, irregular sparking that happens when a wire is damaged, a connection is loose, or insulation is compromised. Left alone, that arcing generates heat and is a leading cause of electrical fires in older or damaged wiring.
AFCI protection is required for most 120V, 15A and 20A branch circuits supplying outlets in dwelling units — bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms, dens, hallways, and similar areas, per NEC 210.12.

Plenty of circuits need both protections at once — a bedroom circuit that also feeds a receptacle near a window AC unit, for example. That's where a dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker comes in, combining both detection types in a single device. They cost more than a standard breaker, but they're increasingly common as code requirements overlap in more areas of a dwelling.
Both devices have a reputation for nuisance tripping, and there's a real reason behind it. GFCIs can trip from genuinely small ground faults caused by aging insulation or moisture intrusion — not necessarily a dangerous fault, but enough imbalance to trigger it. AFCIs can trip from certain motor loads, dimmers, or even some types of LED drivers that produce an electrical signature similar to arcing. Neither is usually a sign the device is broken; it's doing exactly what it's designed to do, even if the cause turns out to be benign.
GFCI is about people, AFCI is about fire. Different failure modes, different NEC sections, different parts of the home. Know which one a space requires — and in plenty of modern dwellings, you'll need both.
